So, ‘which is the best split AC in India I can buy?’ This is the first question that came in my mind when I started looking for a new air conditioner for my living room. And I think you are probably also doing the same. Man, you have come to the right place.
I know, like me, you are badly confused among Hitachi, Godrej, Samsung, or Daikin. Why not, you are going to buy something which you would be using for multiple years. Nobody would like to get a bulky object fixed on the wall and get it replaced in an year.
If you have been planning to buy one, then by now you must have already had many questions in your mind, like –
‘What’s the best AC brand in India?’
Should I go only with AC manufacturer brand or with any good brand?
Which AC is better – Voltas or LG?
Should I select based on the performance or based on high-end brand names?
Well, just sitting and getting confused will only kill the time. So, I did hours of research before making the final purchase decision. Luckily, I made a final choice and I’m totally satisfied with it (so far).
Now, after using and testing it for 10 months I’m pretty happy with the results and its performance. And this is what prompted me to write this review.
I bought this air conditioner last year in April and it’s still working perfect, the same way it worked on the first day.
Alright, let’s get straight to the review along with six other best split ACs in India that I highly recommend.
The best split ACs in India
1. Voltas Split AC 183 IZI3 1.5 Ton 3 Star
If you ask your relatives, friends, or anybody who have used Volats AC, they will probably recommend the same to you. My uncle is using Voltas AC for 8 years with only few services. The point is, Voltas by Tata Group holds a good reputation in the market when it comes to air conditioning.
Coming to Voltas 183 IZI3, the first thing I inquired before deciding on this particular model is its energy consumption. I don’t want to spend the 10% of my salary paying AC bills. So, this remains my top most priority. Voltas 183 izi3 has a star rating of 3/5 and it is indeed good and power consumption is only 1450 W.
The next thing is its pricing. It is comparatively cheaper than other 1.5 ton split air conditioners out there. I already have one window AC for my bedroom and I did not want to spend a huge amount buying another AC. So, my budget was limited and I had to decide with a reasonable price between Rupees 30k – 35k.
Another reason why I chose Voltas is its after-sale service and warranty. Voltas has a pretty good number of service centers in Delhi. Also, there is one just near the place where I live. This product has 1 year on product and 5 years on compressor as manufacturer warranty (on the day I bought the product).
Here’s the product features and specifications at a glance –
- Power input – 1450 W watts
- Capacity – 1.5 Ton
- Energy Star Rating – 3/5
- Ideal for room size – 131 – 150 sq.ft
- Cooling capacity – 5120 W
- Condenser: copper
Voltas 183 izi3 performance (after 10 months of usage)
|WHAT I LIKE||WHAT I DON’T LIKE|
|It consumes very less energy. You won’t believe but I (my mother actually) used it more than 10 hours a day in hot summer months and the bill came unexpectedly very low.||The product comes with only 3 meters of copper condenser coil. I had to buy 7 meters of extra coil because of the distance. It was ridiculously expensive.|
|It’s damn effective with awesome cooling effect. I always set the temperature at 24-25 degree Celsius.||I had to buy a voltage stabilizer separately. But, it’s for all the AC brands I guess.|
|No annoying noise like window AC|
|Simple to operate|
|It has a child lock system, so my daughter can do whatever she wants with the remote.|
|It has a cool LED display with intelligent Sleep Mode.|
A quick video of the product–
Update: Is it still worth buying this model in 2021? No. There are a lot of better options available at cheaper rate now. See below.
Tip: every intelligent buyer checks out at least a couple of products before finalizing the final one to buy. You should do it too. Some people may choose Godrej based on the Indian originality and some people may chose Hitachi because of the brand popularity. So, it’s totally up to your choice. The below products may be equally good as the one that I am using.
2. Blue Star 0.8 Ton 3 Star Inverter Split AC (IC309RBTU)
Blue Star is one of the most popular AC brands in India. In Q2 FY20, Blue Stars’ shares went up by 20% with Rs. 3000 crore total order book. According to GFK Nielson survey report in 2018, 12% of the total ACs sold in India is of Blue Star.

5. Hitachi 1.5 Ton 5 Star Inverter Split AC (RSOG518HDEA)
Hitachi is one brand which comes in our mind whenever we think about ACs. May be, that is because of their marketing or brand awareness. It was my wife who is very brand conscious who only insisted me to buy Hitachi.
I have been using Hitachi window AC in my bedroom since 2017. The experience was quiet commendable in the first year or I must say 1 year some months but then in the end of second year and third year, we had to call the technician specially for gas problem. And it finally became a night mare last summer.
Last summer, I had to fill the gas three times in a month. It turned out that there were many leakages in the pipe and the technician could not figure it out properly. But, apart from that horrible gas leakage problem, the rest works just fine. It’s really effective when it comes to cooling and energy efficiency. And I am still using it.
Nevertheless, among the best split ACs in India, this 1.5 ton air conditioning unit from Hitachi is definitely on the list. Capable of quickly cooling room sizes between 130-150 square feet, it adopts expandable inverter technology. It can increase its capacity during unfavourable weather conditions for boosting the performance.
Moreover, it lowers down the humidity in the room, thus resulting in faster cooling. So, it’s a good choice for people who live at a place with high humidity throughout the day. Like some of models above, the machine uses copper condenser for brilliant cooling and has 5 Star Energy rating.

7. Carrier 1.5 Ton 5 Star Inverter Split AC (ESTER NXI – CAI18ES5R30F0)
American brand Carrier doesn’t have many service centers like Videocon or LG, but it’s one brand you can trust. Carrier has actually a lot of good reviews compared to other AC brands. Some experts say Carrier air conditioners can last up to 10 years. Their technology is top notch and no other AC brands can come close to it when it comes to durability.
Hands down this Carrier appliance is one of the best air conditioners out there. With a wide range of features and modes, this convertible 1.5 ton inverter split AC can chill your room in no time. Depending on the weather condition, you can change the capacity of the unit for pleasant cooling. For example, if there is a sultry weather outside, you can run the machine at 75% Mode (1.2 ton). This lets you optimize the energy consumption too.
This cooling giant runs exceptionally quiet, with sound level as low as 38 decibels. So, noise should not be an issue at all. Another smart feature I like – it can auto clean its fins using water, so the indoor unit always remain free from dust and germs.
It also comes with PM 2.5 Filter that filters out any impurities or pollutants from the air. So, the machine is ideal for people who live in polluted cities.
You’ll have a peace of mind while buying this unit. Why? Because it is built to last longer and also comes with great warranty on PCB and compressor.
(Carrier ESTER NXI comes in different capacities as well. Pick according to your room size.)
Key features –
- 5 Star Energy Rating
- Quick cooling system
- Premium brand with top notch technology
- 4 different cooling modes

Things to know before buying an air conditioner
To make a buying decision and choose the right AC, you actually don’t need to know all the technical things about air conditioners and how they function, and those engineering stuff.
All you need is money and knowing your basic requirements.
Modern ACs come with same technologies and are equally good with pros & cons.
Here’s what you need to know before buying the right AC for your home –
1. Size of the room
AC capacity requirement is always decided by room size, walls specifications, number of people, sun exposure, windows, and door. Some experts say the height of the room should also be considered.
So, while deciding which AC to buy, you should first calculate the size of your room.
- For less than 80 Sq Ft – 0.75 ton
- 80 to 120 Sq Ft – 1 ton
- 120 to 190 Sq Ft – 1.5 ton
- 190 to 300 Sq Ft – 2 ton
1 ton = 12,000 BTU per hour
1.5 ton = 18,000 BTU per hour
2 ton = 24,000 BTU per hour
3,412 BTU = 1 Kilo Watt per hour
Here, BTU means British Thermal Unit, which is the international standard measurement of energy. It is the ‘energy amount’ used to raise the temperature of 0.45 liters of water by one degree Fahrenheit.

2. Inverter or non-inverter
If you are likely to use your AC more than 6 months to year-round, with more than 10-12 hours in a day, then I will suggest you to go for inverter one.
This will save you around 15 – 19% on energy consumption as compared to non-inverter AC.
Inverter AC’s compressor is controlled by Variable Frequency Drive (VFD), which is also known as inverter drive. This inverter drive controls the speed of the motor that rotates the compressor as per different load conditions during the entire usage.
On the other hand, the non-inverter AC compressor runs as per the temperature set by you. It runs either at zero or 100%. This increases the power consumption.
Inverter ACs are new in the market and their technology is still improving. Maintenance of inverter ACs can be little expensive compared to non-inverter ACs.
However, it will save you a lot on the electricity bills in long run.
3. Copper vs Aluminium Condenser
I am not an electrical engineer but let me try my best to describe the difference between Copper vs Aluminium Condenser in Layman’s term.
Actually, it is hard to repair aluminium condenser once broken. Also, it has a very bad reputation in long run. Once leaked, the whole unit has to be replaced.
Most of the modern air conditioners now come with copper oil condenser. They are little costly but they give better cooling effects.
They require low maintenance and can be easily repaired by any local technician when there is a leak. Also, they are reliable and has a longer shell life.
If you see the technical side of it, the main function of these coils in ACs is to transfer the heat. Copper has higher heat transfer coefficient than aluminium, which means Copper coil condenser based air conditioners will give faster cooling effects than the aluminium ones.
4. Energy Star Rating
According to a research by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, average consumers in India prefer ACs that have higher star labels/ratings. They are willing to pay more for air conditioners that are energy efficient.
The Bureau Of Energy Efficiency introduced this Energy Star Ratings in 2006 for electronics/appliances. This is to help the consumers informed themselves about energy saving and the environment.
ACs with 4-5 Star are much expensive but if you are going to use more than 12 hours in a day, go for 5 Star. Your power bills will come down and thus more savings.
5. Manufacturer warranty & services
This is probably the most important thing to look for when you buy any new electronic or gadget because electronics items are considered to be unpredictable.
You never know what might happen in coming days or months. It may last for just 30 days or even for 10 years. So, always look out for warranty.
Another one is after-sale services. Having multiple service centers is really important.
You do not want to run around the whole day or take a day off just to get a small service done at home or what if the product needs to be uninstalled and taken to the service center. It becomes a nightmare.
Windows AC or Split AC – What AC type do you need?
‘Windows AC vs Split AC’ – This is probably the most difficult question when deciding which AC type to choose.
I have both the types and I think I can obviously comment on this. I have Split AC for my living room and Window AC for my bedroom. So, I will share my experience on both.
Actually, both the ACs have the same inherent working system. They both depend on heat exchangers and compressing refrigerants.
There are pros and cons of both the ACs. Here’s what I feel:
|SPLIT AC||WINDOW AC|
|Maintenance can be little bit expensive.||Maintenance is easy and cheaper.|
|If not maintained well, it doesn’t last much longer like window ACs.||It can last longer.|
|It performs better.||Performance is good but not like Split AC.|
|Less noise||It is noisy, especially at night.|
|Hard to install||Easy to install|
|You can install anywhere in your home.||Only in window|
|Price – more expensive||Affordable|
|You need to dig a hole in your wall while installing.||No digging required in the wall|
|Shifting or relocating is difficult.||Shifting and relocating is easy and much cheaper.|
|It has better cooling effects compared to window AC.||It has good cooling effects but lesser than split AC.|
In my case, installing the split AC was such a mess. The technicians had to dig two holes on two different walls to get the pipe outside, because my living room is blocked by the kitchen.
Again, I had to buy extra 7 meters of copper coil, which was ridiculously expensive. I wasn’t aware and didn’t include this extra amount in my planned budget.
So, finally it crossed my budget which was unexpected. That month I had to cut down on other expenses.
In case of window AC, installation was quick and easy, and no extra charges was required. It doesn’t even have an AC stabilizer.
Performance wise, split AC beats window AC at all time.
If you live in a rented house and move frequently, you better go with window AC. I stay in a rented house, however, I had to go for split AC as there was no provision for window AC in my living room and I had no choice.
But, if it is your own house and if you are going to fix the AC only one time, then better spend some extra money and get a split air conditioner.
How to make your air conditioner more efficient?
To make AC more efficient or to maximize the AC-output, follow these things while using:
- Use fans and remove the moisture from your room properly.
- Place the outdoor unit of the split AC in open space so that it doesn’t block the fresh air.
- Place the split AC where you don’t get direct sunlight.
- Close your windows tight. Use curtains on the window to avoid direct sunlight.
My final words
Choosing the best AC is not a rocket science. Know your requirements, the size of your room, and plan the budget accordingly, and you are set to go.
As mentioned above, all modern ACs come with the same technologies and they are almost similar in performance. All you have to look is the after-sale service, energy star ratings, and the type of ACs that should meet your requirements.
